Alpine A290 Rallye: Electric Hot Hatch Targets Grassroots Racing

2026 Alpine A290 Rallye

A New Entry Point into Electric Rally Competition

Alpine has officially launched the A290 Rallye, a purpose-built, customer-focused electric race car. Developed to meet modern rally regulations and market demands for sustainable motorsport, the A290 Rallye is more than a prototype—it’s a production-ready EV designed to perform across multiple competition levels.

Priced at approximately $64,700 USD (€59,990 before VAT), the A290 Rallye positions itself as a serious gateway into electric rallying, while carrying forward Alpine’s legacy of motorsport-focused engineering.

Built for Rally, Engineered for Results

The A290 Rallye builds on the production Alpine A290’s platform but integrates motorsport-specific upgrades:

  • 220 horsepower (160 kW) electric motor
  • 300 Nm of torque
  • ZF limited-slip differential
  • 52 kWh battery operating at 400 V DC
  • ALP Racing Suspension components for track-readiness

Unlike standard road-going EVs, this version is designed with rally-grade safety and performance in mind. A full FIA-compliant roll cage and Sabelt racing seats come standard. The braking system includes 6-piston monoblock calipers with 350 mm discs in the front, while the rear features 280 mm discs with a hydraulic handbrake—a must-have for tight, technical rally stages.

Dimensions and Drivetrain Highlights

The Alpine A290 Rallye retains compact proportions that suit it well for technical courses:

SpecificationValue
Length3,997 mm
Width (w/o mirrors)1,823 mm
Height1,502 mm
Wheelbase2,534 mm
Front/Rear Track1,576 mm
Battery Capacity52 kWh
Max Power220 hp (160 kW)
Max Torque300 Nm
TransmissionReduction gearbox + LSD
Front Brakes350 mm discs, 6-piston calipers
Rear Brakes280 mm discs, 1-piston calipers
SuspensionALP Racing shock absorbers
TiresMichelin Pilot Sport A
Wheels18” EVO Corse 8x18

The car’s chassis is reinforced, and both McPherson (front) and multi-link (rear) setups are optimized for rally use. The limited-slip differential helps translate power into traction on loose surfaces—a key requirement for rally performance.

Track-Ready, But Road-Legal? No.

The A290 Rallye is not a homologated street car. This is a dedicated customer racing vehicle. It’s targeted toward teams and private drivers looking to compete in national or regional electric rally events or Alpine-backed one-make series.

Rally Debut Set for 2025

Alpine has confirmed the car’s debut event will be a one-off rally in France before the end of 2025, limited to select customer teams. This event will provide the A290 Rallye a real-world test in competitive conditions.

A wider rollout will follow, including:

  • Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 10–13, 2025)
  • Rallye Mont-Blanc Morzine (September 4–6, 2025)

These events offer visibility and credibility while demonstrating the car's ability to perform under varied race formats and conditions.

Carbon-Neutral Focus Without Sacrificing Performance

Alpine markets the A290 Rallye as part of a carbon-neutral competition program. That’s not marketing spin—support infrastructure includes eco-friendly recharging systems. Depending on the event, charging may use solar, wind, or other low-impact sources.

This strategic move aligns with broader Renault Group initiatives and gives Alpine an edge among performance brands transitioning to zero-emissions motorsport.

Marketing Integration with Retail Network

Alpine has created an exclusive racing class —Alpine Stores Classification— to link the race car to its retail dealerships. This offers visibility for sales teams, and an opportunity to track brand engagement at a grassroots level.

Expect localized campaigns, digital activations, and physical events at dealerships with close links to the teams running A290 Rallye entries. This channel creates a feedback loop between racing data and customer engagement.

Why the A290 Rallye Matters

Alpine's move comes at a time when electric racing is gaining legitimacy, but still lacks mass-market accessibility. The A290 Rallye fills a gap:

1. Affordability for Privateers

At under $65,000 USD (excluding taxes), this is a serious but approachable price point for amateur and semi-professional racers.

2. Simplicity of Ownership

Unlike complex hybrid rally platforms, the A290 Rallye simplifies the ownership model. No combustion engine, no hybrid complexity—just plug, prep, and go.

3. Competitive DNA

Alpine Racing’s in-house development means the A290 Rallye shares systems and insights with other competition platforms. This isn’t a road car turned track car—it’s a race car built for its purpose.

4. EV Data Collection

Every vehicle is equipped with updated electronic management systems, enabling Alpine to collect key telemetry data. Expect that data to feed into future product development and performance tuning.

5. Entry into FIA-Era Electric Regulation

The car is already compliant with new FIA safety and structural rules. This makes it legal for multiple types of sanctioned rally events across Europe and potentially beyond.

Sound Strategy for a Silent Era

Alpine has addressed one of the most cited concerns in EV motorsport—lack of sound. The A290 Rallye uses a new system that emits dynamic, speed- and throttle-sensitive sound, enhancing feedback for drivers and spectators.

This adds sensory immersion and helps bridge the gap between old-school combustion engine racing and modern electric formats.

What’s Next?

Alpine will track demand and performance through its 2025 test events. If uptake meets expectations, future plans could include:

  • An expanded one-make series
  • A broader range of customer racing support
  • Scaled production runs tied to dealership programs

For now, the A290 Rallye acts as a real-world experiment in how to scale EV motorsport affordably, without compromising the essence of racing.

Key Takeaways

  • The Alpine A290 Rallye is a race-ready, fully electric hot hatch designed for customer rally racing.
  • 220 hp, 300 Nm torque, limited-slip differential, 52 kWh battery.
  • Priced at around $64,700 USD (€59,990 excl. VAT), targeting serious privateers.
  • Compliant with FIA safety and competition regulations.
  • Dynamic debut set for July 2025 at Goodwood.
  • Electric charging strategy prioritizes carbon neutrality.
  • Alpine aligns its racing strategy with brand sales via dealer-linked events.

The Alpine A290 Rallye isn’t about nostalgia. It’s not a heritage exercise. It’s a blueprint for where grassroots electric motorsport is going—and how brands can use it to bridge performance with electrification.
