New Mazda EZ-60 Electric SUV Surges Past 10,000 Pre-Orders

Mazda EZ-60 Electric SUV

Mazda has a new electric contender. The Mazda EZ-60 SUV has secured 10,060 pre-orders within 48 hours, according to Mazda Motor Corporation and new reports from China. Set to launch in August 2025, the EZ-60 signals a major step forward for Mazda's global electric vehicle (EV) expansion strategy.

A New Chapter for Mazda's Electric Strategy

The Mazda EZ-60 is the first model built on the new e-Platform developed by Changan Mazda. Designed mainly for the Chinese market, it marks a significant move for Mazda to strengthen its EV presence.

Pre-orders started on April 25, 2025, with buyers required to place a refundable deposit of about USD 140 (converted from CNY 1,000). Within two days, 10,060 orders had been placed, beating internal expectations.

Key launch milestones:

  • April 25, 2025: Pre-orders open.
  • April 27, 2025: Over 10,000 pre-orders reached.
  • August 2025: Planned market launch in China.

Mazda EZ-60: Dimensions and Design

The Mazda EZ-60 SUV fits squarely into the mid-size electric SUV category. Its proportions align closely with customer demand in China, where compact and mid-size electric SUVs dominate.

Key dimensions:

MeasurementSpecification
Length4,921 mm (193.7 inches)
Width1,920 mm (75.6 inches)
Height1,660 mm (65.4 inches)
Wheelbase2,895 mm (114 inches)

Exterior features include:

  • Full-width LED taillight bar.
  • Signature Mazda grille adapted for EV design.
  • Sleek aerodynamics with flush door handles.
  • Available dual-tone paint options.

The design prioritizes aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining Mazda’s visual identity. The front end carries a closed grille and LED light signature.

Performance and Powertrain

Performance options will offer buyers flexibility. Based on regulatory filings in China, the EZ-60 will initially come with two main variants.

Powertrain options:

  • Single-motor RWD version: 231 horsepower (172 kW).
  • Dual-motor AWD version: 347 horsepower (259 kW).

Top speeds:

  • RWD: Limited to 180 km/h (112 mph).
  • AWD: Limited to 200 km/h (124 mph).

The battery will be supplied by CATL, a leading global battery manufacturer. Early information suggests a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack for durability and lower costs.

Expected driving range (based on Chinese CLTC cycle):

  • Up to 373 miles (600 km).

Actual real-world range under WLTP or EPA standards would likely be lower, but still competitive.

Interior and Features

Mazda aims to deliver an experience familiar to traditional car buyers transitioning to electric vehicles.

Key interior highlights:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • 15.6-inch central touchscreen with voice command support.
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • 64-color ambient lighting.
  • Heated and ventilated front seats.

Higher trims will include a premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and an augmented reality head-up display.

Safety systems will include:

  • Adaptive cruise control.
  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Lane departure warning and assist.
  • Blind-spot monitoring.

Mazda targets a 5-star safety rating under China's C-NCAP testing protocol.

Pricing Expectations

While final pricing will be announced closer to the launch, Chinese media reports estimate the starting price will range between USD 27,500 and USD 34,500.

This pricing puts the EZ-60 directly against rivals such as:

  • Tesla Model Y (local Chinese version).
  • BYD Song L.
  • XPeng G6.

Mazda plans to offer several trim levels to attract buyers at different price points.

Production and Market Plans

The Mazda EZ-60 is being produced at the Changan Mazda plant in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. The plant has undergone upgrades to handle full-electric vehicle production at scale.

Key production notes:

  • Local sourcing of major components like batteries and motors.
  • Increased automation to improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Initial production goal: 50,000 units per year.

Mazda has not confirmed whether the EZ-60 will be exported to other markets. However, company executives hinted that international versions could be considered if Chinese demand proves sustainable.

Why the EZ-60 Matters for Mazda

Mazda’s EV sales have been modest so far. The company's first global EV, the Mazda MX-30, saw limited success due to short range and slow charging speeds. The EZ-60 represents a different approach:

Strategic differences:

  • Localized production with joint venture partner Changan.
  • Tailored specifications for Chinese consumer preferences.
  • Competitive range and performance figures.
  • Competitive pricing strategy.

With China accounting for 60% of global EV sales today, a strong product here is important for any carmaker's future.

Outlook: What's Next for Mazda and the EZ-60?

Mazda will focus on the August 2025 launch with strong dealer support and a digital sales platform in China. A successful EZ-60 rollout could push Mazda to expand its EV lineup further, using the scalable e-Platform foundation.

Key future possibilities:

  • Extended-range versions with larger battery packs.
  • Sportier models with tuned dual-motor setups.
  • Potential global export programs for 2026 and beyond.

Mazda executives also hinted that a second EV model based on the EZ-60’s platform is already under development.

In short: the Mazda EZ-60 SUV has made a strong first impression. With over 10,000 pre-orders in just 48 hours, Mazda has found early momentum in the world’s largest EV market. August 2025 will be a critical test, but early signs are promising.
