Honda will end sales of the Civic Type R in Europe this summer, confirming that the Ultimate Edition will be the model’s final send-off. Production of the FL5-based hot hatchback, a fixture in European performance culture since the 1990s, ends as the company pivots to meet new safety mandates.
Only 40 units of the Ultimate Edition will be offered across Europe, including just 10 for the UK. There will be no further variants.
EU GSR2 Mandate Kills Off the Type R
Starting in July 2024, the EU’s GSR2 safety regulations will require vehicles to have:
- Driver monitoring systems
- Emergency lane keeping
- Speed assist functionality
- Automatic braking enhancements
The Civic Type R lacks the hardware for these systems. Retrofitting it would require major platform changes. Honda chose not to proceed.
Other models exiting Europe due to GSR2 include:
- Toyota GR86 (ends December 2024)
- Mazda MX-5 (limited availability)
- Porsche 718 (transitioning to EV)
