Scania reaches more than 500,000 connected vehicles

Scania trucks

More than 500,000 connected vehicles drive in 100 Scania markets and continuously exchange data. In addition, the telematics unit installed in the vehicles enables customers to improve the operational performance of their operations and provides Scania with important information for the continuous optimization of products and services.

"You shouldn't underestimate the importance of connected vehicles and the data obtained from them. These are essential indicators for the transport sector," says Daniel Koch, Head of Connected Services, Scania Germany-Austria.

"It is a decisive milestone on our way to becoming a provider of sustainable transport solutions. Scania would not be where we are today without intelligent connectivity if the first vehicles had not been connected about 20 years ago. The introduction of our communication unit and the Scania telematics solutions with their growing service portfolio is strategically important milestones - as are the various awards Scania has received over the past decade, "adds Daniel Koch.

From 100,000 to 500,000 in seven years

Ten years ago, Scania was the first brand in the transport industry to introduce a communication unit as standard in all vehicles. Since then, all new trucks have left the factory with a communicator. In 2014 Scania reached 100,000 connected trucks, and since then, it has increased by almost 60,000 annually. From 2019 it has also been possible to network industrial and marine engines, with the historical mark of 500,000 exceeded in mid-2021.

Scania Fleet Management Services (FMS) packages

Scania offers various service packages to choose from, such as the free monitoring package, which enables access to the Fleet Management Portal (FMP) and the Fleet App. The truck fleet owner receives weekly, monthly and yearly reports on his fleet with, among other things, basic vehicle data such as average speed, consumption or idling percentage.

The most popular service package is the control package. It shows detailed information about the company's efficiency, productivity, safety and environmental impact, which was impossible a few years ago. The transparency from a large number of data parameters provides companies with valuable information and, thus, decisive advantages.

So that the entrepreneur can concentrate on his core business, Scania also offers various Tacho Remote Download Services and expense services based on them. The data transmitted while driving can be analyzed and documented easily and following the law, without much additional effort.

"Customers who use our telematics can take advantage of the data available," comments Eva Sahlström, Project and Communications Manager at Sales and Marketing, Scania CV AB. "The Swedish customer LindholmsGruppen, a manufacturer of wooden houses with sawmills and its own haulage company, mentions Scania's telematics services in its annual sustainability report as a valuable tool for achieving its goals in terms of efficiency and lower emissions".

What will happen in the future?

Customers can currently analyze their vehicles based on engine or fuel parameters. With the increasing electrification of heavy haulage, further milestones are evident in the near future. Hardware and software updates also allow performance and data evaluation in battery-electric vehicles.

"A new generation of hardware and software will also be introduced, enabling faster and more progressive data acquisition and analysis," explains Koch, adding: "This will lead to more modular and customized services and is an important, forward-looking step towards more sustainable transport ".

Scania is one of the world's leading transport solutions providers. We are driving the switch to a sustainable transport system with our partners and buyers. In 2020 we delivered 66,899 trucks, 5,186 buses and 10,991 industrial and marine engines to our customers. The turnover in 2020 was more than 125 billion SEK (more than 12.3 billion euros), around 20 per cent of which came from services.

Scania was founded in 1891 and today employs around 51,000 people in more than 100 countries worldwide. Research and development are located in Sweden, Brazil, and India. Production takes place in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, with regional manufacturing centres in Africa, Asia, and Eurasia. Scania is part of TRATON SE.  Scania Germany recorded 4,818 newly registered Scania trucks in 2020, a market share of 10.5 percent. Scania Austria recorded 1,086 newly registered Scania trucks in 2020, a market share of 19.9 percent.
