The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport enters its second generation with 282 horsepower and five seats. Volkswagen has replaced every exterior panel, upgraded the cabin and moved the SUV to the MQB Evo architecture. The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is build it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and begin sales in early 2027.
At 195.6 inches (4,968 mm), this North American midsize SUV needs nearly five metres of parking space. Volkswagen has confirmed the engine, drivetrains, towing limit and core equipment, but it has not released the final price, EPA economy, cargo volume, ground clearance or approach and departure angles.
A True Second-Generation Redesign
Volkswagen cut 5.4 inches (137 mm) from the Atlas's rear overhang and lowered the Cross Sport's roof profile by 2.1 inches (53 mm). Both models retain the same wheelbase and basic width, so designers removed length behind the rear axle. Consequently, rear-seat room should remain a selling point, although Volkswagen still owes final measurements.
The new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport' body uses double-stacked LED headlamps, a masked upper grille and a near-flush tailgate. Most trims add twin front light bars and an illuminated badge. Standard animated rear indicators span the tail, while 18-inch base wheels give way to 20- and 21-inch designs higher in the range.

EA888 Evo5 Power: More Horsepower, Less Peak Torque
The 2.0-litre EA888 evo5 turbo engine produces 282 hp (210 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm), adding 13 horsepower but losing 15 lb-ft of peak torque. Volkswagen has not published the torque plateau, boost pressure or acceleration times.
Specifically, the engine pairs Miller-cycle combustion with a variable-geometry turbocharger. The cycle can reduce pumping losses and knock sensitivity, while adjustable turbine vanes help build boost across a wider operating range. That logic supports Volkswagen's claim of quicker torque delivery and lower fuel use, although testing must verify it.
An eight-speed automatic feeds the front axle or the optional 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Its ratio spread supports low-speed response and quiet motorway cruising. Volkswagen offers AWD with all four trims, so buyers need not select a luxury grade to gain four driven wheels.
Cabin Technology Targets Daily Use
The entry trim receives a 12.9-inch (328 mm) touchscreen; about 90 percent of production will carry a 15-inch (381 mm) unit. Every version adds a 10.25-inch (260 mm) Digital Cockpit Pro, five USB-C ports and dual Qi2 chargers. In addition, the column selector frees space for storage and a dial controlling volume, drive modes and lighting settings.
Volkswagen also improves physical comfort:
- A 12-way driver's seat with four-way lumbar adjustment comes standard.
- Upper trims add thigh support and full-back massage for both front occupants.
- Leatherette covers entry seats; Varenna and Nappa leather sit above it.
- Grey wood trim, rear sunshades and a hands-free power tailgate come standard.
- Nine speakers come standard; the top trim offers a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system.
The paid In-Vehicle Premium package groups navigation, AI voice control, online radio, a four-device Wi-Fi hotspot, parked-car gaming and garage access. Buyers should check the subscription price and trial period.
Safety Technology Adds a Seventh Airbag
Volkswagen fits seven airbags, including a new front-centre unit, plus front and rear parking sensors. The IQ.DRIVE suite supports hands-on Travel Assist from 0 to 95 mph (153 km/h), including driver-requested lane changes. Emergency Assist Plus can steer toward the roadside if the driver becomes incapacitated.
Higher trims add Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, which adjusts speed for mapped curves, roundabouts, ramps and speed humps. The top grade gains Park Assist Plus. From an expert perspective, buyers should wait for independent crash results because IIHS and NHTSA have not rated the 2027 model.
Atlas Cross Sport vs Key Two-Row Rivals
Looking at the data, Volkswagen nearly matches the Honda Passport's output, ties Honda and Mazda CX-70 for maximum towing and trails the Jeep Grand Cherokee's 6,200-pound rating. Its available 15-inch screen exceeds the rivals' 12.3-inch units, but size alone does not settle usability.
| US-market SUV | Base output | Driven wheels | Maximum towing | Approx. base price in euros |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 VW Atlas Cross Sport | 282 hp | FWD; AWD optional | 2,268 kg | Volkswagen has not announced it |
| 2026 Honda Passport | 285 hp | AWD standard | 2,268 kg | €38,420 |
| 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee | 324 hp | RWD; 4WD optional | 2,812 kg | €33,270 |
| 2026 Mazda CX-70 | 280 hp | AWD standard | 2,268 kg | €36,110 |
Conversions use the ECB reference rate published on 21 August 2026. Rival prices exclude destination, tax and options. Volkswagen has not announced a 2027 Atlas Cross Sport price, so current figures remain estimates.
Which Atlas Cross Sport Trim Should You Target?
By comparison with the base SE, the SE with Technology looks like the strongest provisional equipment return. It gains the 15-inch display, 20-inch wheels and upgraded exterior lighting without moving into the leather-heavy R-Line grades. The final price gap will decide the case.
Pro-Tips for Buyers
- Choose 4MOTION for repeated snow or loose-surface use. Front-wheel drive should cost less and may consume less fuel, but Volkswagen still owes official EPA numbers.
- Order the factory towing hardware. The 2,268 kg rating depends on the specified hitch; confirm trailer-brake hardware, tongue weight and vehicle payload before purchase.
- Measure the garage. A shorter Atlas still spans 4,968 mm before any clearance around the bumpers.
- Wait for missing utility data. Cargo volume, rear headroom and payload can change the value case for dog owners, cyclists and caravan users.
The redesigned Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport trades a third row for five-seat space and road-focused styling. Its new engine, AWD option and 2,268 kg tow rating support real utility. Pricing, fuel economy and final dimensions will decide its value.
