The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is clever, energetic, and highly spacious

Opel Astra Sports Tourer

The German manufacturer is showing the utterly new Opel Astra Sports Tourer station wagon version of its compact class bestseller. The newcomer will be available as an electric plug-in hybrid from the start of sales, making it the brand's first electrified station wagon. The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer seamlessly continues the tradition of successful compact station wagons with the lightning bolt, which began almost 60 years ago with the Kadett Caravan - at that time, the first compact class station wagon from a German brand.

The new Astra Sports Tourer offers the full range of drives: The electrified versions complement highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. The engine power range extends from 81 kW / 110 hp to 96 kW / 130 hp for the combustion engines and at the start-up to 133 kW / 180 hp and then up to 165 kW / 225 hp system output for the electric plug-in hybrids. Gasoline and diesel engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard; an eight-speed automatic is available for the more powerful sports tourer vehicles.

"The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is the all-rounder for a new era - electrified, digitized, and excitingly designed. We combine our long tradition of compact station wagons with the latest innovations such as plug-in hybrid technology. We are sure that we will win new customers for Opel with the fantastic looking Sports Tourer," says Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz.

With the compact external dimensions of 4.64 x 1.86 x 1.48 meters (length x width x height) and a loading sill height of around 60 centimeters, the new Astra Sports Tourer shows an all-rounder, the sporty styling with the Opel typically efficient packaging combined. Furthermore, despite a wheelbase that has grown by seven centimeters to 2.73 meters compared to the previous version (+ 5.7 centimeters compared to the 2022 Opel Astra five-door), the new Astra Sports Tourer is a total of six centimeters shorter than the previous model thanks to its particularly short front overhang.

Even with the rear seats up, the luggage compartment of the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer offers more than 608 liters of cargo space - with the seats folded down, the capacity increases to more than 1,634 liters. In this case, the standard 40:20:40 folding rear seats and the rear compartment enable a completely flat loading area. As a result, there is enough space for numerous suitcases and work utensils and more oversized items such as a transport box for a medium-sized dog. There's also plenty of it in the plug-in hybrid versions with lithium-ion batteries built into the underbody: the electrified Astra Sports Tourer still holds more than 548 or 1,574 liters in the rear compartment.

With combustion engines, the optional "Intelli-Space" loading floor makes the trunk even more variable. The movable floor can be easily adjusted to two heights with just one hand and locked at a 45-degree angle. The retractable load compartment cover also increases comfort. If necessary, it can be stowed underneath regardless of the set height of the loading floor - in contrast to some competitors, where this is only possible with a raised loading floor. In addition, "Intelli-Space" also enables direct access to the tire repair kit in the (unlikely) case of a flat tire. Because the equipment, like the first-aid box, is practical and space-saving in the rear so that it can be accessed from the rear seat as well as via the trunk, without having to clear out all your luggage. In addition, the tailgate of the new Astra Sports Tourer can also be opened and closed automatically with a simple foot movement under the rear.

Like the five-door, the stylish Astra Sports Tourer is an objective design statement from the brand - and the first Opel station wagon that shows the bold, clear design philosophy in its very own way. The new Opel's brand face - the Opel Vizor - reflects the Opel design compass, in which two axes intersect with the Opel lightning bolt in the middle. The sharp, Opel-typical crease determines the vertical axis in the bonnet. The Vizor characterizes the vehicle's front as a horizontal line that extends to the wing-shaped graphic of the LED daytime running lights. At the same time, the Vizor integrates technologies such as the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED Pixel headlights and the front camera seamlessly into its harmonious "visor."

The rearview also shows the Opel compass - with the central strobe, the vertical third brake light, and, as with all Astra light units, the ultra-slim LED taillights.

There has been a leap in time with the Sports Tourer in the interior, too, as with the five-door model. The fully digital Pure Panel offers the customer a human-machine interface ( H uman M achine I nterface = HMI ) of the next generation an intuitive user experience. To do this, the passengers use an extra-wide touchscreen like their typical smartphone. At the same time, frequently used settings such as air conditioning can still be selected directly with just a few switches. In addition, cable clutter in the new Astra is a thing of the past: the new generation of infotainment systems can use compatible smartphones in all model variants as standard "wireless" with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer also sets the tone with its ultra-modern technologies, making available and affordable for the compact station wagon segment. For example, the latest version of the adaptive Intelli-Lux LED pixel light highlights in the word best sense. The lighting system comes directly from the Opel Insignia and Grandland and, with 168 LED elements, is a leader in the compact and mid-range.

The outstanding seating comfort of the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is also typical of Opel. The in-house developed front seats are AGR -certified and top compact class: They offer numerous adjustment options, including electro-pneumatic lumbar support and side bolster adjustment, depending on the equipment. In the Nappa leather version, the driver's seat also has an air conditioning and massage function, and the front and outer rear seats can also be heated.

State-of-the-art assistance systems also support the driver from the Intelli-HuD (head-up display) to the Intelli-Drive 2.0 system. In addition, a unique technology further increases awareness and safety in flowing traffic by warning the driver as soon as he takes his hands off the steering wheel.
