New BMW M4 Lineup: Specs, Power and Performance

New BMW M4 Lineup: Specs, Power and Performance

BMW’s 2025 M4 Coupé lineup cuts straight to performance. Three trims—standard M4, M4 Competition, and M4 Competition with M xDrive—deliver more power and quicker acceleration without changing the formula. All three variants retain the aggressive coupe profile, 2+2 layout, and high-revving inline-six engines. The updates for 2025 focus on squeezing out more horsepower and improving response. Let’s break it down.

M4 Coupé Overview: Performance First

The standard BMW M4 Coupé sticks with a six-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It delivers 480 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0-liter inline-six with M TwinPower Turbo technology. This base model hits 0–60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Top speed is 155 mph, or 180 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Fuel economy ranges from 23.3 to 23.5 mpg combined (WLTP), which translates to 10.0–10.1 L/100 km.

Key Specs: 2025 BMW M4 Coupé

M4 Competition: Higher Output, Faster Sprints

The BMW M4 Competition Coupé boosts output to 510 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It swaps in an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive only. This drops the 0–60 mph time to 3.9 seconds, delivering quicker real-world response in every gear.

Key differences from the base M4:

  • Transmission: automatic only
  • Torque: increased by 73 lb-ft
  • Acceleration: 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 mph
  • Output per liter: 125.3 kW/l

This variant is still rear-drive, which appeals to purists looking for high-output balance without AWD weight.

M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive: The Fastest Trim

For maximum traction and quickest launches, the M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive delivers 530 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive drops 0–60 mph to 3.5 seconds, making it the fastest M4 variant.

M xDrive splits torque between front and rear axles as needed, improving grip. It also maintains rear-biased dynamics, staying true to the M DNA.

Performance data:

  • Horsepower: 530 hp
  • 0–60 mph: 3.5 seconds
  • Weight: 3,913 lbs (DIN)
  • Top speed: 155 mph, 180 mph with M Driver’s Package

Despite the added weight and complexity, fuel economy remains identical to the manual variant—10.0–10.1 L/100 km (approx. 23.3–23.5 mpg WLTP).

Transmission Tech: Steptronic vs Manual

BMW keeps the six-speed manual for the base M4 Coupé, targeting buyers who want direct mechanical engagement. The M Steptronic automatic, standard on Competition variants, features:

  • Eight forward gears
  • Drivelogic with adjustable shift characteristics
  • Rapid response in manual mode
  • Launch control for optimized acceleration

Final drive ratios:

8th—0.640

Buyers choosing the Competition trims get quicker acceleration and more usable torque across the powerband.

Handling and Chassis: Same Hardware, Different Results

All three M4 Coupé variants feature:

  • Adaptive M suspension front and rear
  • M Compound brakes with six-piston calipers up front
  • Active M Differential
  • Integrated M Dynamic Mode (MDM) in stability control

Tires differ slightly:

VariantFront TiresRear Tires
BMW M4/M4 Competition275/40 ZR18285/35 ZR19
BMW M4 Comp xDrive275/35 ZR19285/30 ZR20

Steering ratios also change. The base and Competition versions run a 15.0:1 rack, while xDrive drops to 14.6:1 for quicker response.

The weight penalty for AWD is 165 lbs compared to the manual M4. Most of that mass comes from the front driveshafts and additional cooling.

Emissions and Fuel Economy

All M4 variants are rated under the Euro 6e emissions standard. Fuel use and emissions:

VariantFuel Use (L/100km)CO₂ (g/km)MPG (est.)

BMW M4 Comp xDrive10.0–10.1226–22923.3–23.5

No hybrid tech here. BMW keeps it simple: internal combustion only, no 48V systems or electric assistance.

Which M4 to Buy?

  • Choose the M4 Coupé if you want a manual, lighter curb weight, and less complexity.
  • Go for M4 Competition if you prefer automatic control, more torque, and slightly quicker performance.
  • Get the M4 Competition with M xDrive for fastest 0–60 mph times and all-weather grip.

Final Take

The 2025 BMW M4 lineup doesn’t try to reinvent the sports coupe. It builds on what works. Performance increases across the board—without hybrid fluff or digital interference. Three clear options give buyers a choice: manual engagement, rear-drive precision, or all-wheel traction. Power is up, response is sharper, and every variant sticks to BMW M’s core promise—performance without compromise.
