Toyota has launched a new hybrid in Japan that bears the name of one of its most iconic and prestigious models: the Crown. The 2024 Toyota Crown Sport Hybrid (HEV) is a midsize crossover that combines the heritage of the Crown sedan with the latest hybrid technology and design.
The Crown name has been used by Toyota since 1955, and it has been associated with luxury, reliability, and innovation. The Crown sedan was the first Japanese car to be exported to the United States, and it has been a leader in introducing new features such as air conditioning, power steering, and anti-lock brakes. The Crown sedan has also been used as an official vehicle for the Japanese government and the imperial family.
However, the demand for sedans has been declining in recent years, especially in Japan, where consumers prefer SUVs and minivans. Toyota decided to discontinue the Crown sedan after 15 generations and 66 years of production and replace it with a new SUV that carries on its legacy.
The 2024 Toyota Crown Sport Hybrid (HEV) is based on the Toyota Harrier, which is sold as the Toyota Venza in North America. The Crown Sport Hybrid has a distinctive front grille with a large crown emblem, LED headlights and taillights, and a sleek coupe-like silhouette. The interior features a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, a 9-inch head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, and a wireless smartphone charger. The SUV also offers a range of advanced safety and driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking assist.
The Crown Sport Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produces a combined output of 215 horsepower. The SUV also has an e-Four system that provides electric four-wheel drive capability. The hybrid system can operate in three modes: EV mode, which uses only electric power; Eco mode, which optimizes fuel efficiency; and Power mode, which enhances performance.
Toyota also offers a plug-in hybrid version of the Crown Sport Hybrid, called the PHEV, which has a larger battery pack that can be charged from an external source. The PHEV can travel up to 75 kilometers (47 miles) on electric power alone and has a total system output of 302 horsepower.
The 2024 Toyota Crown Sport Hybrid (HEV) is priced from 2.42 million yen ($21,000) for the base model to 3.64 million yen ($31,500) for the premium model. The PHEV version is priced from 4.26 million yen ($36,800) to 5.06 million yen ($43,800). The SUV is currently available only in Japan, but Toyota may consider exporting it to other markets in the future.
The new Toyota Crown Sport Hybrid (HEV) is a new hybrid car that aims to appeal to both loyal fans of the Crown sedan and new customers who are looking for a stylish and eco-friendly crossover. The SUV combines the royal legacy of the Crown name with Toyota's modern hybrid technology and design. It is a worthy successor to one of the most legendary models in Toyota's history. @via Car Division.
