Ferrari 296 Speciale (2026): Performance, Specs, Price, and Tech Explained

Ferrari 296 Speciale

The 2026 Ferrari 296 Speciale is Ferrari's latest step in pushing the limits of performance in a hybridized future. Building on the architecture of the 296 GTB, the Speciale is the most hardcore, track-ready iteration in the model’s evolution. Ferrari’s engineers have fused electric efficiency with race-derived hardware to deliver a car engineered for maximum lap time, without sacrificing everyday usability. As emissions regulations tighten globally, the 296 Speciale proves that electrification can enhance—rather than hinder—driver engagement and performance.

This Speciale model continues the lineage of lightweight, high-performance variants seen in models like the 458 Speciale and 812 Competizione, focusing on sharper aerodynamics, lower weight, and more responsive handling.

Powertrain and Performance

At its core, the 296 Speciale retains the 120-degree 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 found in the 296 GTB. However, enhancements to the combustion chamber and engine calibration boost thermal efficiency and throttle responsiveness. Paired with a single axial flux electric motor, the car produces a combined 880 horsepower—an increase of 44 hp over the standard 296 GTB.

  • The internal combustion engine alone produces 663 hp.
  • The electric motor contributes 167 hp, enabling instant torque fill and improved corner exit speed.

With this setup, the 296 Speciale sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds, reaching 124 mph (200 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. Top speed exceeds 205 mph, with power delivered through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission optimized for quicker shifts.

The hybrid system, borrowed from Ferrari’s F1 expertise, uses a 7.45 kWh battery placed behind the driver for improved weight distribution. The 15.5-mile electric-only range allows for short urban drives with zero tailpipe emissions.

Weight Reduction and Aerodynamics

Weight savings are essential in the Speciale’s performance strategy. Through the extensive use of carbon fiber, aluminum alloys, and titanium components, Ferrari engineers managed to cut approximately 132 lbs, resulting in a dry weight of around 3,175 lbs, and a curb weight close to 3,400 lbs.

Key lightweight measures include:

  • A full carbon-fiber engine bay and front/rear bumpers.
  • Optional Lexan rear window for further savings.
  • Titanium exhaust system, reducing backpressure and mass.

Aerodynamics have been significantly reworked to generate more downforce without increasing drag. The 296 Speciale produces 435 kg (959 lbs) of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h)—a 20% increase over the standard 296 GTB. This is accomplished through:

  • An active rear spoiler that adjusts based on speed and braking.
  • Redesigned front splitters and side air channels.
  • Vertical fins and a new diffuser layout that improve ground effect.

This aerodynamic package is fully integrated with Ferrari's Aero-Integrated Vehicle Dynamics (AIVD) system, ensuring cornering grip without compromising straight-line speed.

Chassis and Dynamics

The 296 Speciale adopts a more aggressive chassis setup, with stiffer suspension, unique damper calibration, and new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires developed specifically for this model. The car rides lower and features a widened front track, sharpening turn-in response and reducing understeer.

Dynamic control systems have been updated as well:

  • The 6-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor (6w-CDS) measures yaw, roll, and acceleration in real time.
  • A revised Side Slip Control 8.0 algorithm predicts and reacts to traction loss faster.
  • The ABS Evo system, derived from Ferrari Challenge racing, provides precise braking even in high-load cornering situations.

Braking is handled by carbon-ceramic discs and Monobloc calipers, reducing fade over repeated laps. According to Ferrari, stopping distances are shorter by 8% compared to the 296 GTB.

Interior and Driving Experience

The cabin of the 296 Speciale strips away unnecessary features in favor of a more focused layout. Carbon fiber trim, Alcantara upholstery, and lightweight door panels dominate the space. The steering wheel features integrated touch capacitive controls, letting the driver toggle settings without removing their hands.

The digital instrument cluster delivers real-time feedback, including G-forces, power deployment, tire temperature, and hybrid system status. A unique “Qualifying” drive mode unlocks maximum electric assist for brief high-performance sessions—ideal for track use.

Despite its track orientation, the Speciale still offers:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Optional passenger display
  • Basic infotainment with smartphone connectivity

Every control is built around the man-machine interface ethos Ferrari follows, allowing the driver to interact intuitively with the car at any speed.

Exterior Design and Materials

While retaining the 296’s general profile, the Speciale introduces multiple functional design changes:

  • The front bumper has larger intakes and sculpted channels for brake cooling.
  • The rear deck is flatter, enhancing airflow to the fixed aero components.
  • Side skirts and underbody panels use aero-efficient venturis to manage turbulent air.
  • The signature central exhaust remains, but now constructed from titanium alloy.

Color options include new racing liveries, inspired by Ferrari’s Competizione models, with lightweight forged wheels available in finishes exclusive to the Speciale.

Pricing and Availability

The Ferrari 296 Speciale carries a projected base price of approximately $450,000 USD, reflecting the extensive engineering and limited production volume. The 296 Speciale A (Aperta)—a retractable hardtop version—starts at roughly $510,000 USD. Ferrari is expected to produce these cars in strict allocations, prioritizing longtime customers and racing clients.

Deliveries will begin in early 2026, with production likely concluding by 2027, aligning with Ferrari’s practice of short-run special series to preserve exclusivity and residual value.

Competitive Landscape

In the high-performance hybrid segment, the 296 Speciale competes with:

  • McLaren Artura Track Pack
  • Lamborghini Revuelto
  • Porsche 911 GT3 RS (ICE-only)
  • Aston Martin Valhalla (hybrid)

However, Ferrari's mid-engine hybrid approach, combined with race-car aerodynamics and power delivery, sets the 296 Speciale apart in terms of driver feedback and technical innovation.

Conclusion

The 2026 Ferrari 296 Speciale reaffirms the brand’s ability to adapt its performance DNA to hybrid platforms without compromise. Through detailed engineering in aerodynamics, chassis calibration, and drivetrain efficiency, Ferrari has built a car that caters to enthusiasts seeking mechanical feedback and measurable performance.

With its precise power delivery, lightweight construction, and focus on real-world usability, the 296 Speciale represents a focused yet technologically advanced interpretation of what a modern performance Ferrari can be.
