2026 Subaru Outback vs XT and Wilderness: Which Trim to Buy?

2026 Subaru Outback vs XT and Wilderness: Which Trim to Buy?

The 2026 Subaru Outback marks the seventh generation of Subaru's most important SUV. With sales of more than 3 million units in the U.S. since its 1995 debut, the Outback continues as Subaru’s core family and adventure vehicle. For 2026, the SUV gets its most aggressive redesign yet, more technology, and updated driver-assistance systems. Pricing starts at $34,995 before destination fees.

Key Takeaways for 2026 Subaru Outback

  • Starting price: $34,995 (about $36,445 with destination)
  • Trims available: Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, Wilderness

Engines and Performance

Subaru continues to offer two BOXER engine choices:

  • 2.5-liter naturally aspirated: 180 horsepower, 178 lb-ft of torque. Standard on Premium, Limited, and Touring.
  • 2.4-liter turbocharged: 260 horsepower, 277 lb-ft of torque. Standard on XT and Wilderness trims.

Both engines pair with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT and feature an 8-speed manual shift mode. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard across the lineup.

The Wilderness trim pushes capability further with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, unique dampers, skid protection, and all-terrain Bridgestone Dueler tires.

Technology Upgrades

The 2026 Outback makes a big leap in technology.

  • 12.1-inch multimedia system: Standard on all trims, includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster: New standard feature, replacing older analog-digital hybrid clusters.
  • Connected services: Subaru bundles a 5-year MySubaru Connected Companion plan with SOS, collision notification, and vehicle checks.

Optional features include a wireless charger, navigation, and a surround-view monitor.

Driver Assistance

Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology expands with features designed to reduce collisions and improve safety in traffic.

Key functions include:

  • Automatic Emergency Steering
  • Emergency Stop Assist
  • Front and Side Alert Assist
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Haptic Steering Wheel Alerts
  • Blind-Spot Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Reverse Automatic Braking

High trims add Highway Hands-Free Assist, including automatic lane changes, pre-curve speed control, and active lane centering.

Interior and Practicality

Subaru emphasizes practicality in the 2026 redesign:

  • Taller and boxier profile increases cargo space.
  • 32-ounce bottle holders in each door.
  • Climate controls separated from the touchscreen with physical knobs and buttons.
  • Recycled materials, including headliner inserts made from plastic bottles.

Trim highlights:

  • Premium: Water-repellent StarTex upholstery, heated front seats, leather steering wheel.
  • Limited: Leather seats, Harman Kardon audio, heated rear seats.
  • Touring: Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, surround-view monitor.
  • Wilderness: All-weather mats, copper interior accents, off-road tuned suspension.

Options and Packages

Subaru keeps packages simple for 2026.

  • Premium Package ($2,270): Rain-sensing wipers, navigation, moonroof, heated steering wheel, wireless charger.
  • Wilderness Package 22 ($2,045): Moonroof, navigation, surround-view monitor.
  • Subaru Outback Wilderness Package 23 ($4,090): Adds Nappa leather, ventilated seats, and upgraded power seating.

Paint options include Crystal Black, Crimson Red, Ice Silver, Magnetite Gray, Sapphire Blue, and Crystal White. New shades Deep Emerald Green Pearl and River Rock Pearl cost $395.

Competitive Positioning

The Outback continues as Subaru’s best-selling SUV in the U.S. Its mix of standard AWD, safety features, and practicality sets it apart from midsize crossovers like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Key advantages over rivals:

  • More ground clearance than most competitors.
  • Standard all-wheel drive across all trims.
  • New driver-assist features aimed at highway automation.
  • Strong resale value and dealer network loyalty.

Outlook

The 2026 Subaru Outback launches later this year, with the Wilderness trim arriving in early 2026. With the Subaru Legacy sedan discontinued in 2025, the Outback becomes an even more important product for Subaru’s U.S. lineup.

Subaru positions the Outback as a core family SUV that can also handle light off-road duty. With new safety features, more tech, and sharper design, the 2026 model builds on its 30-year reputation.
