The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid: A Review and Comparison with Other Midsize Sedans

The 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid: A Review and Comparison

The Toyota Camry is one of the most popular and reliable sedans in the world, with over 40 years of history and more than 19 million units sold globally. For 2025, the Camry enters its ninth generation with a fresh look, a redesigned cabin, and a revised set of exclusively hybrid powertrains.

What Makes the New Camry’s Design Stand Out?

Thanks to some clever visual tricks, the 2025 Toyota Camry has a sleeker and more sophisticated appearance than the previous model. The front end features a narrower and sharper grille flanked by slim LED headlights and fog lights. The bumper has been reshaped to create a more aerodynamic profile, and the hood and trunk lid have been lowered to enhance the sedan’s stance. The side view reveals the familiar shape of the Camry, but with more rounded surfaces and sharper creases that blend nicely. The rear end has been updated with thinner taillights, a sculpted trunk spoiler, and a diffuser-style bumper. The new Camry also offers a range of attractive colors, including a two-tone option with a blacked-out roof for the sporty XSE trim.

The new Camry’s interior has been revamped with more modern and premium materials inspired by the larger Crown sedan. The dashboard has a minimalist and elegant design, with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen for the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument cluster is also fully digital, with a 12.3-inch display that shows vital information and customizable settings. The center console has a sleek and ergonomic layout, with a rotary knob for the drive modes, a wireless charging pad, and a push-button shifter. The seats are comfortable and supportive, with leather upholstery, heating, and ventilation available on higher trims. The cabin also features ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10-inch head-up display for the driver.

The new Camry’s design is aesthetically pleasing but also functional and practical. The new Camry has a spacious and versatile trunk, with 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. The new Camry also has plenty of storage spaces and cup holders throughout the cabin, a glove box, a center armrest, and a sunglass holder. The new Camry also has a low and wide stance, improving the vehicle's visibility and stability.

How Does the New Camry’s Performance Compare to Other Hybrids?

The biggest change for the 2025 Camry is the switch to a hybrid-only powertrain lineup, which means that every Camry will have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. The front-wheel drive models will have a combined output of 225 horsepower, while the all-wheel drive models will have a third electric motor that drives the rear axle and increases the total power to 232 horsepower. Both versions will use a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that simulates eight gears for a smoother and more responsive driving experience.

The new Camry’s hybrid system is similar to the one in the Toyota Prius but has more power and refinement. The hybrid system can operate in four modes: EV, Eco, Normal, and Sport. In EV mode, the Camry can run on electric power alone for short distances and low speeds, depending on the battery charge. In Eco mode, the Camry optimizes fuel efficiency by adjusting the throttle response and the climate control. In Normal mode, the Camry balances the performance and the economy by using the engine and the electric motor as needed. In Sport mode, the Camry enhances the acceleration and the handling by increasing the power output and the steering feedback.

The EPA has not released the new Camry’s fuel economy ratings yet, but we expect them to be similar to the previous hybrid models, which achieved up to 51 mpg city and 53 mpg highway. These numbers are impressive for a midsize sedan, making the Camry one of the most efficient vehicles in its class. The new Camry also has a large fuel tank capacity of 14.5 gallons, meaning it can travel over 700 miles on a single fill-up.

The new Camry’s performance is efficient, powerful, and fun. The new Camry can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds, which is faster than most of its rivals. The new Camry also has a smooth and quiet ride, thanks to the electric motor that reduces the engine noise and vibration. The new Camry also has a sport-tuned suspension, which improves the vehicle's handling and cornering. The new Camry also has an optional all-wheel drive system, which enhances the traction and stability of the vehicle, especially in slippery or snowy conditions.

What Are the Key Features of the New Camry?

The new Camry is not only efficient and powerful, but also safe and smart. The new Camry comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite of driver-assist features, which includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, which can detect vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and road signs, and apply the brakes if a collision is imminent.
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, which can warn the driver if the Camry is drifting out of its lane, and gently steer it back to the center.
  • Lane Tracing Assist, which can keep the Camry centered in its lane, even on curves and in traffic, by following the vehicle ahead or the lane markings.
  • Road Sign Assist, which can recognize and display speed limit, stop, yield, and do not enter signs on the instrument cluster.
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which can maintain a set speed and a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and adjust the speed according to the traffic flow.
  • Automatic High Beams, which can switch between high and low beams depending on the surrounding light and traffic conditions.

The new Camry also offers some optional safety features, such as Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which can alert the driver of vehicles in the Camry’s blind spots or approaching from behind when reversing; Rear Cross-Traffic Braking, which can apply the brakes if a collision is detected when backing out of a parking spot; and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking, which can detect obstacles around the Camry and apply the brakes if necessary.

The new Camry is also equipped with the latest technology and convenience features, such as:

  • Toyota Audio Multimedia system, which features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker sound system. A 14-speaker JBL premium audio system is available as an option.
  • Smart Key System with Push Button Start, which allows the driver to unlock, lock, and start the Camry without taking the key out of the pocket or the purse.
  • Remote Connect, which allows the driver to control some functions of the Camry from a smartphone app, such as locking and unlocking the doors, starting and stopping the engine, checking the fuel level, and locating the vehicle.
  • Service Connect, which allows the driver to access the vehicle’s health report and maintenance alerts from a smartphone app or an email.
  • Safety Connect, which provides emergency assistance, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle locator, and automatic collision notification services.
  • Qi-compatible wireless charging, which allows the driver to charge a compatible smartphone by placing it on a pad on the center console.
  • Panoramic glass roof, which provides a spacious and airy feeling to the cabin and can be opened or closed with a touch of a button.

The new Camry’s features are not only useful, but also user-friendly and customizable. The new Camry has a simple and intuitive interface, which allows the driver to access and adjust the settings and preferences of the vehicle. The new Camry also has a voice recognition system, which allows the driver to use natural language commands to control some functions of the vehicle, such as the navigation, the audio, the climate, and the phone. The new Camry also has a smart device integration system, which allows the driver to connect and use their smartphone apps, such as music, maps, messages, and more, on the touchscreen.

How Does the New Camry Compare to Its Competitors?

The new Camry faces some tough competition in the midsize sedan segment, which includes some of the best-selling and most acclaimed vehicles in the market. Some of the Camry’s main rivals are:

  • Honda Accord: The Honda Accord is one of the Camry’s oldest and fiercest competitors, and it offers a similar hybrid powertrain with 212 horsepower and up to 48 mpg combined. The Accord also has a spacious and upscale interior, a smooth and agile ride, and a generous list of standard and available features. However, the Accord does not offer all-wheel drive, and its styling is more conservative than the Camry’s.
  • Hyundai Sonata: The Hyundai Sonata is another strong contender in the midsize sedan segment, and it boasts a more efficient hybrid powertrain than the Camry, with 192 horsepower and up to 52 mpg combined. The Sonata also has a stylish and modern exterior, a roomy and high-tech interior, and a long warranty of 10 years or 100,000 miles for the powertrain. However, the Sonata does not offer all-wheel drive either, and its handling is not as engaging as the Camry’s.
  • Nissan Altima: The Nissan Altima is a relative value in the midsize sedan segment, and it offers an optional turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and an available all-wheel drive system. The Altima also has a comfortable and quiet cabin, a user-friendly infotainment system, and a standard suite of driver-assist features. However, the Altima does not offer a hybrid powertrain, and its fuel economy is lower than the Camry’s, with up to 25 mpg city and 39 mpg highway.
  • Subaru Legacy: The Subaru Legacy is often overlooked in the midsize sedan segment, but it offers a lot of practicality and value for the money. The Legacy comes standard with all-wheel drive, a feature that only the Camry offers as an option among its rivals. The Legacy also has a spacious and refined interior, a large 11.6-inch touchscreen, and a comprehensive set of safety features. However, the Legacy does not offer a hybrid powertrain either, and its performance is modest, with a base engine that produces 182 horsepower and an optional turbocharged engine that produces 260 horsepower.

To compare the Camry and its competitors more easily, we have created a table that summarizes their main specifications and features:
