The wait is finally over. The new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition has been revealed, pushing the "Le Mans" winning supercar to new heights in a modern form. Ford is unveiling the 2022 Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition as a tribute to the original Ford GT supercar, the prototype that paved the way for Ford's first supercar more than fifty years ago. The car is based on a 1964 prototype that debuted at the New York International Auto Show and eventually went on to win America's inaugural "Le Mans" race.
This is the first Ford GT Heritage Edition, which not only honours previous race successes but also pays homage to Ford's early supercar history. According to Mike Severson, Ford GT's program manager, the Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition is a modern rendition of the original, "where there is absolutely no ambiguity about whose car we pay tribute to."
At Monterey Car Week, the new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition will be unveiled alongside the only existing 1964 Ford GT prototype.
The new Ford GT '64 Prototype Heritage Edition, as seen in the photographs, is based on the same design as the prototype from 1964. On the new Heritage Edition, the colours and speed stripe on the roof are replicated, while the automobile as a whole is enhanced by selected red touches.
Carbon fibre accents may also be seen on the car, such as the 20-inch alloy wheels with Brembo brake callipers and the carbon fibre door frames and seats. The sports seats are similarly upholstered in blue Alcantara suede, and the instrument panel is also made of leather.
Ford began creating its own supercar in 1963 in order to beat Ferrari and win the "Le Mans" event. The first Ford GT prototype (GT / 101 chassis) was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show less than a year later.
Five Ford GT prototypes were manufactured in all. Each prototype was tweaked and improved in order to attain the highest overall performance and speed. These prototypes are some of Ford'sFord's most important automobiles developed in connection with the start of Ford'sFord's GT program, which culminated in a victory at Le Mans in 1966. The vehicles now represent a ground-breaking technique that led to the 2022 Ford GT Heritage Edition.
The Ford GT's history is littered with significant events. The team behind the prototypes believed that the model they were working on was the best option at the time. According to Mike Severson, the 1964 prototype was a time when "creativity was released on the crew behind it," and it was the "starting shot" for Ford's GT development.
The GT / 105 chassis is the sole surviving model of the five Ford GT prototypes manufactured.
Ford has commemorated historical events with the Ford GT Heritage Edition series, including the 1966 "Le Mans" winning race.
