Citroen C4 and C4 X: The New Mild Hybrids That Make Sense

Citroen C4 and C4 X: The New Mild Hybrids That Make Sense

Citroen has always been a brand that stands out for its innovation, comfort, and design. The French automaker has a history of creating cars that challenge the conventions and offer something different to the customers. The latest examples are the C4 and C4 X, two models combining the best hatchback and crossover segments with a distinctive style and a range of powertrain options.

One of the most interesting Citroen C4 and Citroen C4 X choices is the new Hybrid 136 trim, which adds a mild hybrid system to the existing 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This is the first time that Citroen has offered 48V hybrid technology on these models, following the footsteps of the larger Citroen C5 Aircross. The Hybrid 136 promises to deliver a smooth and efficient driving experience, with up to 50% of electric driving in urban areas and a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to the non-electrified version.

Now, we will look closer at the features and benefits of the Citroen C4 and Citroen C4 X Hybrid 136 and see how they compare to the competition. We will also analyze the writing style of Jonny Lieberman, a senior features editor at MotorTrend, known for his witty and opinionated reviews of cars and motorcycles. We will try to mimic his style and tone while also being original, informative, and coherent.

How Does the Hybrid 136 Work?

The Hybrid 136 is based on the compact and lightweight 48V hybrid technology, which consists of four main components:

  • A 48V battery that recharges during certain driving phases, such as braking or coasting. The battery has a capacity of 432 Wh and is mounted under the driver’s seat, saving space and weight.
  • The new generation's 136 hp (100 kW) 3-cylinder petrol engine is specifically designed to adapt to this hybrid system. The engine features a variable valve timing system, a high-pressure direct injection system, and a low-inertia turbocharger for optimal performance and efficiency.
  • A new electrified ë-DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox incorporates a 21 kW electric motor ë-Motor produced in France. The gearbox offers smooth and fast shifts and can operate in fully automatic or manual mode with steering wheel paddles.
  • A hybrid control unit manages the interaction between the engine and the electric motor and optimizes the energy flow according to the driving conditions and the driver’s preferences.

The Hybrid 136 works simply and seamlessly without the need for recharging. The system can operate in three different modes:

  • Electric mode, which is activated automatically at low speeds or when the driver selects it via a dedicated button. In this mode, the car can drive up to 80 km/h (50 mph) using only the electric motor for zero-emission and silent driving. The electric mode can last up to 50% of urban journeys, depending on the battery charge and the driving style.
  • Hybrid mode, which is the default mode, and combines the use of the engine and the electric motor, depending on the power demand and the driving situation. The hybrid mode can switch between electric and petrol propulsion or use both simultaneously for optimal efficiency and performance. The hybrid mode can also recover energy during braking or deceleration and store it in the battery for later use.
  • Sport mode is activated by pushing the accelerator pedal to the floor or selecting it via a dedicated button. In this mode, the system uses the full potential of the engine and the electric motor for a maximum power output of 157 hp (117 kW) and a maximum torque of 285 Nm (210 lb-ft). The sport mode also enhances the responsiveness and agility of the car for more dynamic and fun driving.

What Are the Advantages of the Hybrid 136?

The Hybrid 136 offers several advantages for the C4 and C4 X in terms of driving comfort and environmental impact. Some of the main benefits are:

  • Reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: The Hybrid 136 can achieve a fuel economy of 4.5 L/100 km (52 mpg) and a CO2 emission of 107 g/km in the WLTP mixed cycle, which represents a 20% improvement compared to the non-electrified 1.2 PureTech 130 EAT8 versions. This means lower running costs and taxes for the customers and a lower environmental footprint.
  • Increased driving comfort and convenience: The Hybrid 136 can offer a smooth and quiet driving experience, thanks to the electric mode and the dual-clutch gearbox. The system also adapts to the driver’s preferences and the road conditions for customized and versatile driving. The Hybrid 136 does not require any plug-in charging, eliminating the hassle and anxiety of finding a charging station or a power outlet.
  • Access to low-emission zones and incentives: The Hybrid 136 can drive in electric mode in urban areas, allowing it to access the low-emission zones that are becoming more common in many cities worldwide. The Hybrid 136 can also benefit from some incentives and subsidies that are offered by some governments and local authorities to promote the adoption of electrified vehicles.

How Do the C4 and C4 X Stand Out in the Market?

The Citroen C4 and Citroen C4 X are not the only models in the market that offer a mild hybrid option. In fact, many competitors have already introduced similar solutions, such as the Peugeot 208 and Peugeot 3008, the Opel Corsa and Opel Mokka, the Ford Fiesta and Ford Puma, the Hyundai i20 and Hyundai Kona, and the Kia Rio and Kia Stonic. However, the C4 and C4 X have some distinctive features that make them stand out from the crowd, such as:

  • The design: The C4 and C4 X have a unique and bold design that blends the elements of a hatchback and a crossover with a sleek and aerodynamic silhouette, a high and muscular stance, and a large and expressive front end. The C4 and C4 X also offer a wide range of customization options, with 31 exterior color combinations, seven interior ambiances, and four color packs.
  • The comfort: The C4 and C4 X have a strong focus on comfort, which is one of the core values of Citroen. The models feature the Advanced Comfort seats, which are soft and supportive, and the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension, which absorbs the road imperfections and provides a smooth and cushioned ride. The models also offer a spacious and practical cabin, with a generous boot space of 380 liters (13.4 cubic feet) for the C4 and 440 liters (15.5 cubic feet) for the C4 X, and a modular rear bench that can fold in a 40/60 split.
  • The technology: The C4 and C4 X have a high level of technology, both for safety and entertainment. The models have a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charging pad, a head-up display, and a digital instrument cluster. The models also feature a range of driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and emergency braking.

Conclusion

The C4 and C4 X Hybrid 136 are the latest additions to the Citroen lineup, and they represent a smart and sensible choice for customers who are looking for a mild hybrid option in the compact segment. The models offer a simple and smooth hybrid system that can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20% while also providing a comfortable and convenient driving experience. The models also have a distinctive and attractive design, a spacious and practical cabin, and high technology and safety features.

The Citroen C4 and Citroen C4 X Hybrid 136 are available to order from €33,200 ($35,919) and €33,900 ($36,676), respectively, and the first deliveries will take place in spring 2024. The models are part of the Citroen electrification strategy, which aims to offer an electrified version of every model by 2025. The C4 and C4 X are also available with petrol, diesel, and fully electric powertrains to suit the different needs and preferences of the customers.
