Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE: Limited Edition EV Targets Style and Speed

Volkswagen ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE

Limited Production Run With Historic Roots

Volkswagen is producing only 1,990 units of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, tying the number to the original Golf Fire and Ice from 1990. Pricing starts at €56,020 in Germany, which translates to approximately $60,800 USD.

The move follows strong interest in the FIRE+ICE show car revealed at the 2024 ID. Treffen in Locarno. Unlike many concept-inspired models that never make it to showrooms, this one did. Volkswagen responded to fan demand and delivered.

Two Motor Options, One High-Torque Goal

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE comes with two electric powertrain configurations:

  • 210 kW (286 hp)
  • 240 kW (326 hp)

Both deliver 545 Nm of torque (402 lb-ft). The higher-output version hits 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 5.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h (124 mph).

Both versions are rear-wheel drive and use a 79 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery. The maximum DC charging capacity is 185 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in about 26 minutes under WLTP test conditions.

Charging and Range Performance

Combined WLTP range tops out at 591 km (367 miles), assuming ideal conditions and the most efficient configuration. Real-world numbers will vary due to:

  • Driving style
  • Climate control usage
  • Outside temperature
  • Passenger and cargo load
  • Terrain

Volkswagen based its charge time and range metrics on a 23°C test temperature, 5% starting charge level, and ideal ambient conditions.

Design Cues Pay Tribute to the 1990s Original

The exterior features Ultra Violet Metallic paint, inspired by the original Golf II Fire and Ice edition. Other unique touches include:

  • Red-anodized Flaming Red roof strip
  • 20-inch 'Locarno' alloy wheels with red GTX center caps
  • Light projections on the ground show fire and ice motifs when the doors open
  • Smoked LED tail lights exclusive to this model
  • Retro Fire+Ice logo on the roof spoiler

The design team didn't just copy retro elements—they modernized them.

Cabin Design With Dual-Tone Precision

The interior layout mirrors the FIRE+ICE theme with sharp dual-tone contrast:

  • Driver side: “On Fire Red” seat and stitching
  • Passenger side: “Keep Cool Blue” finish and accents

Seats feature a quilted pattern modeled after BOGNER down jackets. The design includes decorative stitching, FIRE+ICE logos, and even zipper-like detailing in the seat center sections. The steering wheel, dash, floor mats, and door trim are all color-matched.

Collaboration With BOGNER Adds Authenticity

This is more than a style package. Volkswagen again partnered with BOGNER FIRE+ICE, the Munich-based luxury sportswear brand. The fashion-meets-performance effort mirrors the strategy from the original Golf Fire and Ice campaign, which sold 16,700 units—far exceeding its planned 10,000-unit run.

BOGNER’s Managing Director called the transition from concept to production a “major milestone,” citing it as proof that fashion and mobility can co-exist in a mass-market product.

Equipment and Trim: No Basic Configurations Here

Volkswagen avoids complexity by bundling features into three key equipment packages. All are standard on the FIRE+ICE edition.

Interior Plus Package (Standard)

  • Sport seats with electric massage function
  • Augmented Reality Head-Up Display
  • Harman Kardon sound system

Convenience Package (Standard)

  • 2-zone Climatronic automatic climate control
  • Integrated navigation system

Assistance Package (Standard)

  • Park Assist Plus
  • Rear view camera
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Keyless Access

Also included:

  • Sports suspension standard on both versions
  • DCC adaptive chassis control standard on the 240 kW version
  • Optional 235-size sports tires on request

Production Strategy and Market Timing

Volkswagen’s strategy is clear:

  • Build desirability around electric mobility
  • Reinforce brand loyalty with nostalgia and performance
  • Limit production to drive demand and residual value

With just 1,990 units available, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE gives VW another collector-grade EV alongside the Buzz and R32 variants of the past.

Volkswagen is shipping the FIRE+ICE to select markets only. No details on North American availability yet. But if demand matches that of the original Golf Fire and Ice, these units won’t sit unsold.

Competitive Landscape

In the compact performance EV segment, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE competes with:

  • MG4 XPower (429 hp, AWD) – lower price but lower brand cachet
  • Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric – not performance-focused
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – more power, but larger and more expensive
  • Cupra Born VZ (upcoming) – platform sibling with different branding

Volkswagen aims for buyers who prioritize design, exclusivity, and EV performance—without going into full luxury territory.

Key Takeaways for Buyers

Volkswagen’s ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE blends performance, retro appeal, and EV practicality into a limited-edition hatchback. It’s fast enough, unique enough, and rare enough to matter.

Reasons To Buy:

  • Strong powertrain options (210 kW and 240 kW)
  • Exclusive design and interior details
  • Real-world range near 367 miles
  • DC fast-charging in 26 minutes
  • Loaded with high-end features at no extra cost

Possible Dealbreakers:

  • No AWD available
  • Limited to 1,990 units worldwide
  • Estimated $60,800 USD base price may stretch budgets
  • Not confirmed for North America

Verdict

The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE delivers measurable performance gains, high-efficiency range, and limited-run exclusivity. Volkswagen has fused historic brand equity with modern EV execution. For serious buyers, hesitation means missing out.
